Fukui Prefecture, located in Japan’s Hokuriku region, experiences heavy snowfall in winter, making agriculture difficult. As a result, various industries have developed as side businesses to sustain livelihoods during the winter months.
One of Fukui’s most famous industries is Sabae City’s eyewear production. The manufacturing process for glasses involves over 200 steps, with each step handled by highly skilled craftsmen and specialized factories in Sabae. Sabae eyewear accounts for over 90% of the domestic market share and 20% of the global market share. Known for their high quality, Sabae glasses are trusted not only in Japan but also by overseas manufacturers.
Fukui Prefecture is also famous as the ‘Dinosaur Town.’ Approximately 80% of the dinosaur fossils discovered in Japan have been found in Fukui, including many fossils discovered there for the first time. The Dinosaur Museum in Katsuyama City, Fukui, is one of the world’s top three dinosaur museums, attracting numerous visitors from both Japan and abroad.
