Ironware
Nanbu ironware is a traditional cast iron product produced mainly in Iwate Prefecture. It developed in the 17th century with the encouragement of the Nanbu family, lords of Morioka Domain, and is particularly famous for its iron kettles and pots. Nanbu ironware is heavy and durable, and is characterized by beautiful decorations made using unique casting techniques. It is said that water boiled in an iron kettle becomes mellow, and it is also highly valued as tea utensils. Currently, products with modern designs that preserve tradition are also produced, and are highly regarded both in Japan and overseas.
