Product Description

Wakasa-nuri is a type of lacquerware produced around Obama City in Fukui Prefecture. It originated in the early Edo period when official craftsmen of the Obama Domain, which governed the area near Wakasa Bay, created designs inspired by the beautiful underwater scenery. Wakasa Bay is a scenic area known for its many famous spots, including Amanohashidate, one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views, and Kehino Matsubara, one of Japan’s Three Great Pine Groves.

A distinctive feature of Wakasa-nuri is the “togidashi” technique, where patterns are made using materials such as eggshells, seashells, and pine needles, over which layers of lacquer are applied and polished. This technique gives the lacquerware a unique elegance and depth, making it highly prized as a work of art as well as widely used in daily life. Wakasa lacquered chopsticks account for 80-90% of lacquered chopsticks produced in Japan.

Chopsticks are an indispensable part of Japanese dining culture. In recent years, the global boom in Japanese cuisine and the increase in visitors to Japan have boosted the popularity of lacquered chopsticks not only domestically but also worldwide. Furthermore, Obama City, the production area of Wakasa-nuri, gained international attention in 2008 when it presented lacquered chopsticks to then U.S. President Barack Obama, due to the shared name “Obama.”

These chopsticks come in a special paulownia wood box, making them ideal as gifts for loved ones or as commemorative items for special occasions. Overseas, many people also enjoy displaying Wakasa lacquered chopsticks as interior decorations to appreciate their beauty.
