The term “tomesode” originates from the word “tome” (to stop), referring to how the long sleeves of a “furisode” (long-sleeved kimono) are shortened and “stopped.” This expression avoids negative connotations associated with “cutting” (which could imply severing relationships) and instead reflects Japan’s cultural emphasis on valuing bonds and relationships.

What is Kuro-Tomesode?

Kuro-Tomesode is a black tomesode kimono worn exclusively by married women. It is the highest-ranking formal kimono, traditionally reserved for close relatives of the bride and groom, such as the mothers, sisters, or the wife of the matchmaker, during wedding ceremonies and receptions. Wearing the most formal attire conveys respect, gratitude, and honor to the invited guests.
