About “Edo Komon,” Japan’s representative kimono
“Edo Komon”, is a kimono with an overall pattern created using a stencil-dyeing technique that developed during the Edo period as formal wear for samurai. Patterns are carved by skilled artisans into stencils made from Mino washi paper coated with persimmon tannin, which makes them water-resistant.The patterns are so delicate and fine that from a distance the fabric appears solid, but up close the intricate beauty emerges. It is said that carving a single stencil takes at least three months. Using these stencils, artisans in Tokyo who hold the government-certified qualification of Edo Komon traditional craftsperson dye the fabric, and only then is the “Edo Komon” completed.
Characteristics of Edo Komon:
1.The patterns are made of dots and lines, dyed using stencils hand-carved by skilled artisans.
2.From a distance, the fabric appears solid; up close, the patterns reveal a subtle yet elegant design. This balance makes Edo Komon suitable for both formal and everyday use.
3.A crystallization of artisan skill… Carving the stencils and dyeing the fabric require highly advanced techniques and mastery. Today, Edo Komon is highly valued both domestically and internationally as one of Japan’s representative traditional crafts.

Proper Care Instructions
★ If juice or water gets on a silk product:
If you accidentally spill water or wine, quickly gently pat the area dry using tissue or a soft cloth.
If the item gets wet in the rain, gently blot the moisture with a dry cloth as well.
(Be especially careful with hot coffee, green tea, or alcohol, as they easily penetrate and stain the fibers.)
★ If oil-based stains such as cosmetics get on silk:
When an oil-based stain occurs, first place a dry towel underneath the stained area.
Then, cover the stain with another towel, and using a soft cloth moistened with volatile solvent or benzine, gently tap the area to transfer the stain onto the towel beneath.
★ For dried or surface dirt:
First, lightly brush off any rough or dry dirt.
Next, press a soft cloth dampened with water (or with volatile solvent/benzine for oil stains) onto the area and gently tap to absorb the stain.
