Wakasa-nuri is a type of lacquerware produced around Obama City in Fukui Prefecture. It originated in the early Edo period when official craftsmen of the Obama Domain, which had territory near Wakasa Bay, designed patterns inspired by the beautiful seabed of the bay.

Wakasa Bay is a scenic area famous for many picturesque spots, including Amanohashidate, one of Japan’s three most famous scenic views, and Kehi no Matsubara, one of Japan’s three great pine groves.

A distinctive feature of Wakasa-nuri is the “togi-dashi” technique, where patterns made from eggshells, seashells, pine needles, and other materials are layered with lacquer and then polished down. This gives Wakasa lacquerware a unique elegance and weight, making it highly valued both as art and as everyday items.

Wakasa lacquered chopsticks dominate 80–90% of the lacquered chopsticks produced in Japan. Chopsticks are an essential part of Japanese dining, and thanks to the global popularity of Japanese cuisine and international tourism to Japan, lacquered chopsticks like Wakasa-nuri are increasingly popular worldwide.

Obama City became famous internationally in 2008 when it presented lacquered chopsticks to then-U.S. President Barack Obama, due to the name coincidence.

This product comes in a specially designed paulownia wood box, making it perfect as a gift or a commemorative item for special occasions. Overseas, many people also enjoy displaying Wakasa lacquered chopsticks as beautiful interior decor.
